How it Works
-
4321 Laurel Canyon Blvd, Studio City, CA 91604
Street Parking is available directly in front of our building. We have a lobby and standing-height work areas where you can check out and test the equipment.
-
Pickups: 12:30PM to 6:00PM on your pickup day
Dropoffs: 8:00AM to 12:00PM on your dropoff day
-
If you return later than 12:00PM on your drop off day or you pick up earlier than 12:30PM on your pick up day, you will be charged a fee equal to one rental day.
Exceptions to the late return fee:
If you'd like to pickup just 1-2 hours early or dropoff 1-2 hours late, we may be able to accommodate without additional fees depending on equipment availability. Please reach out with your specific request. The earlier we receive that request the easier it is for us to accommodate you. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate all requests.
-
Weekday Rental Minimum: $15
Weekend Rental Minimum: $25
If your rental subtotal is less than the amounts above, your rental may be subject to an additional fee equal to the cost difference.
-
If you have your own equipment rental insurance, please confirm that it is an Inland Marine policy for rented equipment. You can confirm this by reaching out to your insurance producer. Please send your COI to [email protected] with the following certificate holder info:
Backstory Studios, LLC
12605 Ventura Blvd #1036
Studio City, CA 91604
You can process your COI by emailing the certificate holder info above directly to your insurance producer/provider OR if your insurance producer allows you to import the certificate holder info yourself through an online portal, you can do that as well. If you add us as a certificate holder, your insurance producer will need to have our information on file in their system. We check the validity on all COI’s that we receive.

Don’t have equipment rental insurance? We have solutions. You can rent from us without any insurance by placing a security deposit hold on your credit card for the replacement value of the equipment. So if a camera package that you are renting has a replacement value of $3,000, the temporary CC hold would be $3,000. The hold would be returned to your credit card account within 3-4 business days of the rental return.
If you are looking for where to find equipment rental insurance, we recommend Athos Insurance, TCP Insurance, and Front Row Insurance.
-
If you are using your own EQ rental insurance, we still require a $500 USD security deposit for any equipment valued between $500 and $10,000 USD. Once we get all your information, we’ll send the rental agreement along with a credit card authorization form for you to fill out for the temporary deposit hold. Once the equipment has been returned, your funds will return to your credit account within 3-4 business days. For rental packages valued over $10,000 USD, we require a $1,000 credit card hold for every $10,000 USD equipment value. So a rental package with replacement value of $30,000 USD will have a $3,000 USD security deposit.

Delivery services are subject to availability and include a fee of $7 per mile of distance from our location in Studio City (91604) and the delivery address.
A delivery to Culver City, for example, would be 11 miles at $7 per mile, which is $77 total (the round trip is 22 miles total at $3.50 per mile). There is a delivery minimum charge of $35.
Sharegrid rentals have a delivery charge of $8 per mile of distance from Studio City and do not include additional fees from Sharegrid.

We offer shipping services through Fedex and UPS. Out of state? No problem! Just reach out and we’ll provide a shipping quote.

If any issues with the equipment arise during your shoot, please reach out as soon as possible. We offer phone and FaceTime live support for all our equipment. If the issue cannot be solved remotely, we will do our best to quickly replace the equipment with the same or similar gear so you can continue shooting. We almost always have backup cameras and lenses available. If an exact replacement is unavailable, we will help source an alternative as quickly as possible. This situation is extremely rare. For high-value shoots, we strongly recommend bringing or renting backup equipment.
By renting with us, you agree that our maximum liability is limited to the total rental cost of the equipment. We are not liable for any loss of income or other damages related to your shoot.
-
You must provide valid insurance coverage for any international travel and disclose all countries you plan to visit with the rented gear at the time of booking. Our equipment may not be taken to any country in Central or South America or to any country with a Level 3 or higher U.S. travel advisory.
Our gear may never be used for drone operation, regardless of insurance coverage.
Neither our insurance nor ShareGrid’s temporary insurance through Athos covers these restricted-use cases.
Failure to disclose international use, use near or over water, or drone use may result in platform suspension, continued rental charges, and full responsibility for any loss or damage to the equipment.
-
Equipment is meant to be used, and normal wear and tear is covered in your rental fee. We perform equipment cleanings between rentals.
If equipment is returned with damage that significantly reduces its value, or shows excessive dust, dirt, sand, residue, debris, or moisture, additional cleaning or repair fees may apply. We aim to keep these charges fair. Our in-house cleaning and repair rate is $80/hour, excluding replacement parts or hardware.
If equipment cannot be serviced in-house, it will be sent to the manufacturer’s service center for professional repair or cleaning. The renter is responsible for all related costs, including continued rental fees until the equipment is fully repaired and returned to our possession.
Renters are not responsible for electronic malfunctions, factory defects, or pre-existing wear and tear. To ensure fairness, we document equipment condition with time-stamped photos before each rental.
-
We understand that productions do not always go as planned. If you need to cancel, please do so as early as possible. Last-minute cancellations may prevent other renters from booking the gear and result in lost income.
